Good morning BP family from Dickinson Texas. I've recently have decided to get into REI to be able to create a second income and to also leave something behind for my kids. I would say the thing that sparked my interest was after the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey when my wife's grandmother had 4ft of water in her house and was just gong to sell her house as is after ripping everything out. Pretty morbid right to think about a family members loss could potentially be a great thing for you but anyways the deal didn't go through but I've been itching to get educated on investing ever since. I'm really hoping to meet other individuals in the Houston area and have that extra support system and learning from others.

Welcome Skylar! I'm in League City and run a local meetup for REIs called Texas Realty Club. 

We do two things – 1) a monthly workshop-style meeting where we have guest speakers followed by open discussion, 2) a monthly social where we gather for a more casual networking experience. We don't charge for anything we do and we don't do sales pitches. Everyone's welcome to attend.
