Rental property profits

Hello everyone this is my first forum post to bp. I'm a newbie REI currently working towards getting my first property. I was interested in flipping first but i gravitated towards renting first instead to possibly generate monthly cash flow while building equity. Before i make my final decision I'm interested to know roughly about how much profit does one earn monthly from a rental property. I'm sure it varies by location, property size etc; hopefully I can start off with a duplex. I'd be grateful for a little input from you guys. Thanks!
