Getting started with debt

Is it possible to start investing while you have student loan debt? Where does the money to be invested come from? I read someone wanted to use their investment profits to pay down their debt. Is there a thread someone can suggest that goes over how to get started?? I am clueless. My husband and I have no background in contracting or construction. What are some good resources to use to find contractors. How is this all funded??
