Starting out, needing tips before I make plunge into marketplace

Good afternoon, professionals!

My studies at my university are becoming less and less intense, meaning that I am able to dedicate more time to studying up on real estate practices and the habits of top agents. I have set my eyes on starting my career in Los Angeles, but I haven't fully committed for fear that the potential of a newbie getting washed out in a market as big and as fast-paced as LA. What is one way for a newbie to thrive in such a place?
