Rental Property vs Flipping for your 1st Deal?

I am looking for my first deal while I learn about investing and the real-estate market.  I need to generate income, so I can reinvest in more properties. I think it is important to share I plan to continue working my full-time job (40 hours) while I learn real estate investing. My husband and I own our home and we have a three year old child. 

Anyone currently in my shoes or have walked this path? What was your first deal? How did you get started?
