Buying property 110 miles away

I'm currently looking at buying a duplex in Columbia Missouri. It is a college town with about a 100,000 population. This is my last semester of school in Columbia and will most likely be moving back to Saint Louis. I plan/figure that I will have to hire a property management company to manage the property. Everyone keeps telling me that its a horrible idea to buy a property 110 miles away, that I will never be in control etc. Anyone on here have properties that are not in their neighborhood?
