Question - Expired Leases but existing Tenants

So the Duplex I am looking are has tenants, but there is no existing lease agreement.  Does this pose a problem as a new owner of the property?  If they are paying, I see no issue.  However, if payments slow down or do not come, does this situation complicate any legal situations that need to transpire?
