Is investing in a condo a good place to start out or a SFH

Are condos a good starting point or SFH for buying and holding for beginners. To me it seems like condos are the way to go if you want to get your foot in the door. I think a a condo that runs under 100k located in a good area would give me a taste of what being a landlord is like with a smaller chance for error. The exterior of the property is maintained by HOA, so all you'd really have to manage is the interior and your tenant. What are some of your opinions? I know HOA can run to $300 but it still seems worth it considering you are in the "learning" phases of real estate investing.
