Real Estate Investing. Start Small or save for larger unit

New to investing in real-estate but was thinking about getting started. I'm currently interested in buying a small single unit apartment (around 60 k) and renting out the unit. 20 percent would be put down. I figure this would be a good way to "cut my teeth" so to speak and learn the ropes. Do you think this is an appropriate way to get started or should i continue to save for a larger down payment and purchase a larger piece of property? Any personal advice the board can throw my way would be much appreciated!
