What do people use to find crime rate in each city and suburb??

I found a couple deals in a town not too far from me. I've driven through it and a lot of kids are outside playing and riding bikes it seems like a great place for families to live which is why I want to buy in this area. This made me think. What about towns I'm not sure of or that are not in my back yard? How can I find the crime rates. I just want to find reliable sites and sources to point me in a good direction as I am still new to all of this. Can't hurt to reach out to BP members for help thanks!

Start with your local PD. For instance, Dallas PD has an online tool that allows you to pull incident, call reports down to street level. You can also submit requests. Other local PDs will run reports and email within a day or a few. I used the reports to determine what was happening in the immediate neighborhood of the house I was buying. I was looking for the really bad crime.
