Am I prepared to start my career in Real Estate?

I am going to partner up with a good friend, that is a general contractor, after I graduate from FSU.  I am looking to flip as well as buy/hold investment properties.  My current savings adds up to around 5-6k but I am still saving.  How much should I be looking to start with?  I don't really want to go with using other peoples money for my first investment/purchase.  I am willing to do whatever to get started.
