Property management to build portfolio

hello,

I am looking into ways to break into the real estate market in my area and find my "niche". I live in a rural area and the market is "hot" - many houses are sold before a signs even in the yard, and overpriced. I discussed with a local real estate agent and he said there is a desperate need for good property managers in the area (which is surely true of many areas). He said that would be a good way to learn about the business and raise funds to start buying properties to manage myself (looking to make this a full time position down the road).. is it putting the cart before the horse to get into property management before managing your own? Do I get certified before trying it or get experience first? (I live in ohio). Do I need to do it with a big company or can you do as a private contractor?
