Financing 1st Property

I work for a husband/wife duo in Colorado. We have been mulling over investing for a while, and have decided that 2017 is going to be our year to buckle down and get started. We've found the area that we want to focus on and have decided that we want to start with a rental multi-family property. We were told that in order to get financed, we would need to have our 6 months of our personal mortgage and 6 months of the rental property mortgage in savings. There has to be another way. How did you finance your first property? What advice would you have for financing your first property? Thanks!
