House hacking for a newbie

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, my Name is Patrick Flanagan and I just got out of the Marine Corps, and I'm currently working as a electrician apprentice. I know I want to "house hack" Im trying to find out if I should buy a multi family home or just a 3 bed 2 bath and rent out the rooms? I'm brand new at this and I know I don't want to work for money, I want money to work for me. I don't know where to start so I have turned to bigger pockets for help.
