Good way to start?

I am new to real estate investing and I am leaning towards owning rental properties and wondering if a good way to start is to go look at properties I am not interested in buying but just getting the feel of looking at good and bad properties and seeing what i notice as I look at these properties . I would appreciate any feedback!
