New york a good market for real estate investing ventures?

Im relatively new to all the ins and outs of real estate investing. I have read a few books, watched 100+ videos on REI, and listen to numerous podcast... that said, Ive heard a common theme regarding the new york area and how its not the most profitable place for this type of business. This has caused me to second guess much as I live in new york and was told its always best to start in your market. What techniques (if any) would you guys feel is best in the newyork market? Maybe wholesaling? If so how would I go about finding interested cash investors? Thanks in advance!
