how to find an apprentice position that is not a scam

Hello, 

I am just starting in the REI , I went to a few seminars, red some literature, talk to people with experience, etc. I would like to start as an apprentice sine I have heard that is a great way to start. Does anyone have any recommendation where to look ? I have also heard about apprentice scams where you need to pay for your learning experience to the individual that you are running errands for. Also, does apprentice get any sort of stipend?

I am getting mixed answers and I would greatly appreciate if anyone can give me some good advice who already went through this.
