REI for Military Member: How to Select a Location

I just recently joined BP as part of my REI education and due diligence. I am in the military and as most know, military bases aren't always in the best locations. That said, anywhere I'd be interested in buying some investment properties would involve a location away from my duty station. Any suggestions as to where I should focus my searching? I've read many considerations once a location is determined, but getting that narrowed down seems to be the biggest obstacle at the moment.
