1940s/1950s Homes vs. 1980's Homes?

Hello,

I'm looking to purchase my first single-family home for me to live in. One neighborhood has a lot of homes built in the 40's and 50's. The other neighborhood has a lot of homes that were built in the 1970's and 80's. Do you have any advice for me? I do not have any experience in real estate but just got the green light to go ahead and look.
