Getting a PreApproval

Hey guys, 

I'm planning on going to my bank soon to try to get a PreApproval. Is it possible for banks to gives me an idea if I'll get approved or not based off of some general information such as my income, credit, debt to ratio, etc. WITHOUT running my credit?

Just thinking of ways to lessen the credit impact although it's such a low impact.

Also, what types of questions should I prepare to ask?

I'm looking to get a duplex with a FHA loan.
