Pre foreclosure and foreclosure questions

I'm in the NYC area and was curious to know a few things. One does anyone know how to find these tho of properties? Other then going to a real estate agent. Do pre-foreclosed homes need to be bought directly from the owner? Can for closed homes only be bought by cash? If I were to attend an auction would I need cash capital or can I have be pre approved from a bank and still bid?
