Tips for a newbie in Portland

Hey everyone ! 

I am new to investing and so glad I found BiggerPockets! Tonight I attend my first REI meeting and I'd love to be able to network with others in the area. I've spent the past 6 years working in the banking industry and I'm a little overwhelmed with the amount of information available to new investors.

Would anybody have any tips on where I should start? I was initially leaning towards wholesaling and I attended a three day training seminar, but the trainer insisted that I start investing outside of my market. I've reached out to a few people on BP and I was told that maybe that isn't the best option. I'm so grateful to have found this site and everyone so far has given me valuable information.

Any tips would be appreciated and if you'd be open to meet for coffee I know some pretty great spots! :)
