I am a REI in NJ and looking for MLS access. How can I get access without taking the whole course and paying all the fees?

You can not get access unless you are an agent. You can not pay an agent for access...they would lose their MLS privileges if they were caught...which would be really easy to get caught doing as they would just need to see two IP's logging into the account at once.
