Apartment complex vs multi family vs single family

I'm just starting out as a real estate investor. I've read a lot about different investment techniques and strategies. I'm curious what is the best way to start out with investing. Should I buy a single family home to rent out? Buy a multi family home, and rent out the other units? Or buy an apartment complex? I have a group of friends who are also interested in assisting me with funds and management.what is the best way to get started with real estate investing?
