self managing landlord temporarily out of town

For a landlord who self manages, what happens when you are out of town for vacation or travel for work, or whatever? I'm thinking about getting into REI as a buy and hold locally, and figure at least initially I would end up self managing. However, I do occasionally end up on a business trip for my day job, and I try to visit my folks out of state a couple of times a year.

Do you have another number you have them call in case of an emergency?  If so, who do have them call?
