Getting a foot in the door

Hi.  I've been interested in real estate investing since I was in high school.  Now I'm new to BP and just started seriously studying up so I can map out a plan.  My wife and I just moved into our house last September.  When I started introducing myself to the neighbors I learned the house directly across the street from me is a 2-family rental.  I'm committed to investing but not ready as I only started learning.  I'd love to reach out to the owners (who I found out live in town) and introduce myself as someone eager to learn.  Any advice on how I should approach them?  I only have their mailing address so will send a letter, but not sure what I can say that will help get a response.  Any ideas?
