Another LLC Question

HI all, 

I have an llc that i started a year or so for my real estate business.  I started it through the Company Corporation...kind of like legalzoom i think.  I have been getting bills from them for $235 per year for "registered agent service".  I want to know if this "registered agent service" is a required thing that I need to have to operate a llc.  If so, does this fee seem in line with what others are paying? I don't remember agreeing to this fee when i registered my llc so I'd like to know.  Thanks Very Much.
