Investing in Town Homes

As a beginning investor I am looking for a type of property that would be a great  avenue to start on. I am leaning more towards town homes. It seems like they would be a good place to start in my area because they are low cost, low maintenance, and could possibly offer great cash flow. Before I make any move I definitely would like more insight as to why I should or shouldn't. If anyone could give some advice on this it would be much appreciated. Thanks.
