how to find info on vacant house in the Los Angeles Area

I am new to REI and trying to figure out "How" and "Where" to find out information on abandon/vacant houses.

I can I find some info on the Tax Property Assessor site, but only house info, but can't see if there are taxes owed.

I can find out the names of who owned the houses but that is about it.

I want to find out more information about the houses and need direction as to where I need to look.  Do I actually have to go down the LA city offices to find out more information?

thanks
