Applying for mortgages from banks

My plan is to go to maybe 3-5 banks and apply for mortgages.

Can I just go in on a Saturday morning and talk to a representative? Maybe ask some stock questions to break the ice? Get his/her business card and start emailing?

Would it be good to wear a tie or would that be seen as try hard?

What do banks typically require from an application (x years of tax returns, etc.)
