I was just recently released from prison after 17 years. I am looking to start a new life that will leave a legacy that is better than what it is now. I want to show my boys that life can give you a second chance and how to take advantage of that chance. I need all the help i can get, cant afford all those programs right now.

Just be upfront and honest. Look people in the eye and give them a firm handshake. Always say what you mean/mean what you say. Under-promise and over-deliver.

You'll be surprised how many people will give you a chance...but expect and do not be offended if some folks are wary of an ex-con, it's just natural. I like @Timur Salikov idea of learning the trades. You will find much more acceptance there since they are generally a much rougher crowd than, say, office workers where all the sissies are..... :-)

Never give up, you'll be fine, get into property asap even if you have to move to a city where homes are still cheap. Check out Govt grant programs for people recently released form prison, take that money and invest in RE.
