Asking for advice as a first time buyer currently in the military overseas.

I am currently stationed in Japan and will be here for another 2 years. I don't want to wait until I go back to the States to invest in real estate. I just really want to get started with this to start getting some cash flow as well as experience. I understand that I can use my VA loan to purchase a property with 0% down but I am not sure if there are any specifics I should know regarding my situation. I am married and currently only have around 5 grand in savings. I am not even sure if I can even get started with my current resources and this is partly why I am here today asking for different points of view and experiences. Thanks in advance.
