Need a guide to help in buying a home to live in from an auction / forclosure

This may be the wrong place, but I would like to buy a distressed / forclosure propery and work on it.  Not to sell, just to live in.
I have a home now, which I would sell to get the money for the auction but I'm very afraid of not knowing what to do, or having a check list to follow to ensure it is a clean transation.  Is anyone willing to teach me how to buy from an auction?
