long or short term rental?

Hi All! I’m new here, hoping to learn and succeed.  I’m homeowner from NY. I would like to start investing - buy 1 bedroom in FL. I don’t have enough cash for down payment in walking distance to the beach. So I’m thinking to change the strategy and buy long term rent 1 -2 bed in Tampa or so, then with time (? But what time?) buy first condo close to the beach for short term rental. Has this sense, or no?
