Networking and other wholesalers

Hello every one in New Jersey and the rest of Bigger Pockets. I've went to some networking events in search of building some relationships with people who are doing deals in my local area. I've found it difficult thus far to find someone who could be a mentor/partner in my area. I find that a few of the people don't mind working with me, but they want me to pay them. As a college student I need the little money that I do have to spend on books. I've offered to share my leads that I drive around and put in time to get to local investors to start a dialogue, I've even offered to take a smaller profit , but I find that some guys are really not open to working with me at. Is anyone else having this issue or is it just me in my area of New Jersey? Does any one have any advice or know anyone in Essex/Bergen county area willing to reach out? Thank you all for your time.
