My Lot Property has Squatters

I just made the plunge and got my first property, bought it at a tax auction. The property looked vacant at the time, but when my surveyor sent back his report, he said that there are multiple tents on the property and they had wired over electricity from the house next-door, there are also dogs on the lot. Just a small residential lot. Has anyone experienced this before? Is this as simple as reaching out to a sheriff to clear it?
