Moving to a new city with intention to house hack

Hello, thank you to anyone that can lend some advice!  My current situation is my wife has just accepted a new position which will require our family to relocate from Los Angeles to the Detroit area.  We plan to rent to start in order to learn the area but also would like to find a small multifamily that we can house hack.  I am wondering if while looking for a rental unit if we should be transparent with a future landlord about our plans, seeing as ideally we would purchase before our 12mo lease would end possibly requiring a sublease or breaking the lease.

A little more information, we have a 3 year old and my wife's new job will be partially work from home. We plan to use a FHA loan to finance the multifamily or seller finance if the option arises.
