Goal setting and thinking long term

For those of you focused on building buy and hold portfolios, what kind of techniques do you use to help you keep your eye on the ball and not bail out for short term gains or worse, letting yourself get LAZY? Currently I'm using my 40th birthday as sort of my mid range target date to aqcuire all of the doors I want to have and that birthday falls on a friday. By imagining a specific day, where I'll be and what I'll be doing that day it makes it a bit easier to really imagine myself having completed my seemingly overwhelming goals. Anyone else have tips and tricks they like to use to keep their goals right in sight? Best Regards, Jameson Sullivan
