Partner or no partner

how essential is it have a partner in this business? And if you don't really know someone that well, what are the key questions to ask? how should the roles be divided and all that stuff. 

You know, how they the only ship that doesn't sail is partnership. But I feel like I need someone who I can rely on because sometimes it can be a bit much.
