Is it worth buying-and-holding in the UK?

Hi, everyone. I'm from the UK and a lot of people here seem to think that investing in real estate here would be a bad idea, especially doing the kind of thing I want to do in the future -buying and renting out each room to either international or local students. I was interested in renting rooms of a building to international students because they tend to be willing to pay more in rent and because, Portsmouth being a University city, they're not hard to find. However, it seems very difficult to get international students on board because of visa-related reasons? I was talking to a lady who said she had to keep checking they haven't expired and such. I would really love a second opinion about renting to international students or even just buying-and-holding in the UK in general
