Advice on 1031 Exchanges

I'm new to real estate investing and I'm exploring the idea of using money that I have tied in a 401k retirement fund in exchange for an investment property. Is this possible? if so where do I start. This 401k plan was from a previous employer. I'm being told that I can move the fund to an IRA or just leave it sitting in the current 401k fund. Its been sitting for about a year now and I really don't want to put it into an IRA that I have no control over.

You can roll those funds over into a solo 401k, as mentioned by a poster above. If you search the site with the term 401k you should come up with a very recent thread full of fantastic information. Several members of BP are 401k providers and can give you all the direction and explanations you need to start using your 401k from your previous employer to get into REI. @Dmitriy Fomichenko @Justin Windham
