This may sound goofy, but if you provided something which contains pictures of the apartment before move-in, model numbers of appliances and links to user manuals online, information on how to use the thermostat, locking doors & windows, operating faucets, garbage collection guidelines, contacting the HOA or property management company, what brand and color paint you use in each room, etc.

All of my properties are either brand new or completely renovated in the last 3 years and have stainless steel appliances, granite, wood floors, brand name faucets and everything is color coordinated and matches.

However, the very same day we signed the lease and I handed them the keys, they asked if I could re-paint some of the walls to a different color and change out the closet doors to mirrored doors.

I rent the entire space that is included in my rental contract, and have the right to "own" that space as if it was my own property - within reasonable exceptions that I agree to (like occasional inspections or agreeing to not paint the walls a different color or put in a swimming pool, etc.).I know you're trying to get the place in great shape, etc.
