They can take a family trip to the local gas station or visit a friend/relative, which is probably how you handled it.Don't be so quick to compensate tenants when it's an ordinary inconvenience that everyone experiences, even homeowners.

You will need to provide someone with a work vehicle, pay for the insurance, gas and maintenance and then you will need to constantly worry about being sued for overtime pay, sexual harassment, retaliation, age or race discrimination and a thousand other possible issues that could result in a civil lawsuit against you, personally.

From my experience in propane, but never having dealt with Natural Gas, I'm about 99% sure you would have to call the gas company that provides you the gas to come work on the gas line and get the separate meters set up on the house.

We had to add 10 piers under house, mostly new floor joists, all subfloor, most sheetrock, mostly new wiring, new HVAC and ductwork, new sewer, water, and gas lines, etc… and we were able to stay under $60k I believe.
