@Chris Ochsner- thanks - good luck ....1)  if you will be  using  cash - great ...if you are needing to finance any deal you enter - make sure that your folks and you get  formally pre approved for whatever scenario you are planning ...2) make sure you have  ample  credit  history  3)  you might consider  looking for a multi family property you can move into and  then learn the  ropes ...good luck

As an example, you could find an attorney who would draft up the docs for additional security and formality rather than relying on a title and escrow company to create a simple Promissory Note and Deed of Trust (or mortgage, depending on the state), as I see other DIY loans being done.

I'd be interested also in talking to an accountant who is an expert on cross-border taxes, if folks have recommendations for someone who is reputable and has that expertise, and who works with middle-class individuals (as opposed to wealthy families or businesses).
