I'm not a tax expert, but I seem to recall that if your move was over 50 miles away and was due to a military reassignment, you may be eligible for a partial exclusion ... so not the full $250k (or $500k if you are married) but darn close to it since you were close to the 2 year mark, and probably enough to wipe out your tax bill entirely.

You can ask them for examples ... what are you good at ... listen to what they are doing, what they need, know what you are good at and marry up the two to add value ... figure out how to do that on a consistent basis with other investors, sellers, buyers, and really everyone you meet and the world is your oyster ... and that is true in REI but goes well beyond.
