so I don't have to nail the exterior sheeting to the new studs,  correct? 

A skim coat can realllllllly save some time and money, it fills nail holes and really allows the walls a fresh start.

@Wayne Brooks nailed the correct answer, as usual.

That residual produce can continue to cause oxidation to occur on metal surfaces, electrical wiring, galvanized studs, nails, etc.Using hydrogen peroxide doesn't leave a residual.

Don't polish it.

@Joseph Gozlan - the tax aspect of apartment syndication is something I'm having difficultly nailing down past the high level concepts.
