Our first MTR experience was a 4-plex, feet-to-the-fire style. 

I would also opt for a galley style kitchen with an open island / peninsula similar to your 1 Bed scheme.  

Doing some research in 2-3 states and wondering what are the best areas in your state to look at properties for purchase that would encompass most of these:-Ability to get a few acres (don't need 100, but say 3-5)-Home that can come with land suitable for small hobby farm/homesteading type stuff (couple of horses, maybe small garden, etc.)

With longer leases it might be worth it. all comes down to your investment style. eats into the cashflow but you are more protected.also, my situation is different due to mortgage cost. your one properties rent is 2.5 of my properties. my average mortgage is around 650.  

@Anthony SwainMore and more young people prefer house hacking because it is financially flexible and suitable for those with student loans or other obligations.

The designer should have a good sense of what to do with your place since they are an expert in this field so I don’t think it’s worthwhile to hunt around for styles you like. space planning and layout will be an important first step.

You must be VERY careful when building cabin-style homes to STR, as they may be difficult to refinance.
