They weren’t happy with the notice, started attacking me about all the things wrong with the unit (duh - that’s why we need to renovate), yelling about how good the other tenant has it and how awful it is that we are “kicking them out”, but not kicking out the other tenant (their side was already updated before we purchased the property).

Everything that goes right or wrong is all on you.The advantage of buying an existing business is that if you do it right, you get to stand on the shoulders of giants to take it to the next level.

The people who fail to invest time to learn the right way to do something will often have to pay a lot of money to learn the wrong way of doing it.
