Definitely start by learning more about STRs - how to select markets and underwrite deals is where I would start.

One thing I will say is to start before you think you are ready, learning from experience will always be more valuable than any BP post or youtube video that you watch. 

I think that you would learn a lot and wouldn't get hurt too badly, but I do not think you'd wind up in a financially advantageous position to buying an existing home.

You will both learn that there is more to a safe loan than a note and deed of trust.In no order, typical loan documents will include: NoteDeed-of-TrustPurchase Contract and escrow instructions to confirm your deal and the associated deadlines you and your lender will have to meet.Preliminary Title Report, which you and your lender should learn to read to understand all liens against the property.Personal Guarantee (You do want to protect your lender don't you?)

Looking from a mentor in SF Bay Area - someone with more experience that I can learn from and hopefully share some experience as well .
