A way to control the access to my money and use it in another investment while it continues to grow in another vehicle.

Heavy debt at this time....I do own a home that we bought December...I rent my old home.

Sounds like you are doing all of the heavy lifting anyhow, why do you need him, other than to show the property?

I admit most of my experience is states in the SE and hurricane/heavy wind related. 

Using the funds that we had saved up to purchase a new car, I convinced my wife (she’s a saint) to reallocate the money in order to purchase an investment property with the expectation that we would be able to refinance the money back out in 12-18 months to then purchase a needed newer vehicle.

This vehicle has number of advantages over self directed IRA.

After nearly a decade of moving wherever work has taken me, I'm ready to make my own work and move along with it, and am aiming for real estate to be that vehicle that both grounds me and propels me forward.
